Tools By Patients for Patients
By using a human centred design process and patient engagement strategies, we've co-designed and deployed an infographic in hospitals and a video to help patients better understand the role they can play in the bloodwork process while in hospital.
The importance of Patient Centred Work
Patient centred work recognizes that each patient has their own needs, preferences, and values. This type of work ensures the patient is involved during all aspects of the project while iteratively listening to their opinions and understanding and making changes accordingly. Our patient participants as well as a team of patient research partners came together to undergo an end-to-end patient centred design process to bring about the following tools in an effort to help patients requiring bloodwork make informed care decisions, while actively and meaningfully being supported in a safe and respectful hospital environment.
Bloodwork Process Infographic & Video
The infographic on the right was designed by patients and intended to be used for patients with new to very little experience with bloodwork in hospitals. Its main driving factor was to help patients feel oriented to their new environment while empowering them to play a more active role in their care — helping them feel more like partners in their care. The video below was created to help introduce real-life care team members to patients in a way that's more familiar while explaining their different roles and responsibilities in a way that's easy to understand. The video also depicts the real needs of patient participants we worked with during the research part of the project that helped inform and direct the rest of the project.
